Pet air travel crate size guide based on IATA guidance

Choosing the right travel crate is an essential part of preparing your pet for a flight. It should allow your pet to stand naturally, turn around, and lie down comfortably, with adequate ventilation and security throughout the journey.

Travel crate sizes

These are indicative external crate dimensions. Actual dimensions may vary by manufacturer and model.

SizeExternal dimensionsLength × width × height (cm)Approximate empty crate weight
Small61 × 41 × 383 kg
Medium69 × 51 × 486 kg
Medium–large84 × 56 × 588 kg
Large91 × 61 × 6611 kg
Extra large102 × 69 × 7615 kg
Giant122 × 81 × 8923 kg

The right size depends on your pet’s measurements and the crate’s design. Check the actual internal dimensions before choosing; external dimensions alone are not enough.

How to choose the right size

Measure your pet while standing naturally to estimate the internal crate dimensions required.

ABody length
From the tip of the nose to the base of the tail.
BElbow height
From the ground to the elbow joint.
CShoulder width
Across the widest part of the shoulders.
DStanding height
From the ground to the top of the head or ear tip, whichever is higher, while standing naturally.

Estimate the required internal dimensions

Internal length
A + (B ÷ 2)
Internal width
C × 2
Internal height
D + bedding thickness

Check the fit in practice: your pet must be able to stand, turn around, and lie down naturally inside the crate. Allow for movement and the bedding you will use.

Travel crate features

A suitable travel crate should include the following features to help keep your pet safe during the journey:

  • Strong, safe construction

A rigid material suitable for your pet’s species and size.

  • Adequate ventilation

Ventilation openings that allow airflow in line with the airline’s requirements.

  • A secure door

A door that closes securely to prevent escape during transport.

  • A suitable floor

A solid, leakproof floor with absorbent bedding.

  • Secure assembly

All crate parts, fastenings, and locks firmly secured.

  • Food and water containers

The required containers, attached according to the airline’s instructions.

  • Identification labels

The labels and information required for transporting live animals.

Before you fly

  1. Measure your pet carefully before buying a travel crate.
  2. Check that the internal dimensions suit your pet, rather than relying only on external measurements.
  3. Help your pet get used to the crate well before the travel date.
  4. Confirm the airline’s requirements for crate type, dimensions, and your pet’s weight.
  5. Check destination requirements and any health documents or permits needed before travel.
